Co-operators can now see how their local co-operative store once looked in times past, as the National Co-operative Archive has signed up to mapping website Historypin.
The site has allowed the archive to add vintage images to Google Maps/Street View, showing viewers how the area in which the photos were taken used to look. The website also allows users to fade in and out images to see how the area has changed.
Places featured include Corporation Street in Manchester City Centre, which has been home to many Co-operative Wholesale Society premises over the decades, many of them still standing, Toad Lane in Rochdale – site of the Rochdale Pioneers’ first shop, and altered drastically since the days of the Pioneers – and streets in Oldham, Scunthorpe and Wrexham.
The archive is to add more images soon. Visit the National Co-operative Archive’s History Pin channel at: www.historypin.com/channels/view/14718002/#/home
