What does Co-operative Principle 5: Education, training and information, mean in 2023 and beyond?

As part of the International Co-operative Alliance’s (ICA) global consultation on co-operative identity, the Co-operative College is hosting our own online consultation, specifically focusing on Principle 5 - Education, training and information.

The UK's first co-operators understood the power of education and used a room above their shop to provide opportunities for their members, their member’s families, and the wider community to develop key skills, such as learning to read and write. This gave birth to Principle 5.

A century and a half later, our consultation seeks to understand what Principle 5 means now. What are today’s key skills, and to what extent should co-operatives still play a role in supporting the education of their members?

Join us for this interactive session, where your views will help feed into the ICA’s worldwide consultation. There are no right or wrong answers, and we’ll be offering a variety of ways for you to participate – from taking part in the live discussion, to online polls, and typed feedback capture. Everyone is welcome.

The session will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 15 November at 1pm (GMT).

Please note that this event will be in English and no translation will be available.

Background

The aim of the current global consultation is to strengthen our co-operative identity and to test how well our values and principles, as expressed in the Identity Statement, set co-operatives apart from other business models.
